Today a new report from the training camp. We were quite busy and had a beautiful and variable course. Two different varieties were put up and we had action all the time. So we didn't keep a low profile and made lots of noise in our crates while the girls built up the obstacles. I - your Sissi - am dedicated to singing these days while others call them wolves' howling. Alpha is doing the base voice. On the camp we let them see what we are able to perform. Alpha is still doing his obedience stuff while waiting for his turn. I was more clever. For example we had to circle around the pole and I made a shortcut once in a while. Let Claudia walk around it since I know she will pass again. They also made a nasty trick: Instead of walking straight ahead we had to turn first and could make the straight run only the second time. So I said: I know better and in the end there are treats, so it is more convenient for me to make the straight run. Nero found a new peeing place, the tunnel is boring now, this time it was a pylon, funny guy.

THS, Abkürzungen und Pinkelpylonen/ THS, shortcuts and pee pylons

So, another subject: One of the questions, people who plan to add a schnauzer to their family is about shedding. In fact I have already talked to someone about this subject personally where the reason to take a schnauzer (among others) was that husband and (grown) children are allergic to dog hair and having chosen a schnauzer proved the fact that they didn't have any problems with her hair. BUT - she already knew the breed and wanted one. A schnauzer is not only fur but has a character of its own, requiring sense of humor and everything you read in some of the posts: absolutely cuddly, protective, even pushy and (the black type) frightening for some people who have problems with black dogs. I mean: it is not just about the hair.
On the other hand the schnauzer fur and look is some work. Clipping and shearing must be done regularly - or you do it yourself or have a good dog groomer for this. Not everyone is able to create the schnauzer look. In fact there are often very bad examples..
I must say, we didn't have dogs with short hair, a wire-haired dachshund which was brushed regularly and didn't lose much hair, either. But try to pet a short-haired dog, you will find much more hair on your hands and clothing than ever with wired or long hair which is regularly groomed. By the way if you are looking for a dog which really doesn't shed, get a poodle. I talked to a poodle owner recently and she said he really doesn't shed. Of course he has to be clipped regularly as well.
Of course if you believe in fairy tales, you can get Labradoodle, Golden Doodle or any ...oodle, these are breeds which run under the label of "designer dogs" because people thought that they had only the desired traits of both breeds. Even the man who invented the labradoodles now isn't happy with the result and has regrets about this. A breeder in VDH (German Dog Association), who passed all the exams for breeding won't offer his dog for this kind of "breeding" By the way poodles are great and very intelligent dogs. Maybe the image suffered from these exaggerated grooming styles. When you get to know them you will learn that, maybe inform yourself in one of the dog exhibitions and talk to owners and breeders. Once they had been breeder for hunting but this got lost mostly.
Back to the schnauzer: they loose hair but not as much as their short and long-haired friends. Regular grooming keeps the shedding to a minimum.
Was ich damit sagen will: man sollte es nicht nur auf das Haar reduzieren.

Sommerhitze/ Summer heat
Ultimately we really had those "dog days" - tot hot for the schnauzers. So we limit the walks to short morning and evening rounds and the training is exercised adequately as well. Since giants love water, this is ideal for cooling down. There are these cooling pads for sale right now but it is not sure if the really is the right solution. The dogs might get a cystitis from the freezing ground. They look for some place themselves - the tiles in the apartment, the hedge which always has a slight breeze and Sissi made herself a pit in the ground to cool down.

Neues von Banaak-Sam/ News from Banaak-Sam
Vielen Dank an Familie B.
Hey guys, I am really proud. Just got a video from Banaak-Sam's family. He has learned to swim. Not that I taught him that. I am as hydrophobic as I was before my pregnancies but no swimming lesson. The kids from the A litter liked to play in the pool however. The boys from the B litter were born in winter, so no chance because we don't have a heated pool.
Have a look at the film. Thanks so much to family B.

Rally Obedience für zwei/ Rally Obedience for two
Hey guys, today we weren't on the dog training camp. First we had a nice walk and been running around and then I, your Alpha, found a nice mud puddle with really dirty water. No pictures because my human didn't have her smart phone with her. She wasn't exactly amused and before getting into the car she emptied two two-liter-bottles of water on me. Not that this was enough! So for the visit afterwards I wasn't exactly groomed well and had to remain in the garden while my mom Sissi went into the kitchen to claim her cheese pieces. In the afternoon we practiced Rally Obedience in the garden and searched for treats. Doing the RO we noticed that we don't like to wait for our turn while the other is doing the training. So we offered ourselves as a couple and what shall I say: I have invented a new sport: Rally Obedience for two. We tried it at once and there are so many possibilities. We will present our first ones for you. There are many people with more than one dogs and at least for the exercise this might be an idea. Well, next time, you might get a more serious article from my human about Rally Obedience, otherwise you all think we are just fooling around.

Rally Obedience
Erste Sahne!
So, guys, sind I am still not a "companion dog", my possibilities in doing sports are somewhat limited. Nevermind, we still can do the three-way-competition and other stuff in THS and we are beginning to explore rally obedience. I think this is really a schnauzer thing. Lots of action, not waiting too much and no boredom... We had our Friday meet up and our club companion Heinz brought his rally obedience signs and made us a great course. And.. I must say, I didn't cut a bad figure. I tried it a couple of times and my mom Sissi as well. In the end I led my junior handler Paul as well. Cool stuff!
In the future I will tell you more about this - like I did with THS - where we are already trained. Did I tell you that we will have a tournament in our club in September? This year we are even more active and go visit other clubs. Great input and so we get used to other camps, dogs and humans.
We did the slalom thin this time in THS and our mom and I divided the time, was quite alright with this hot weather.
Claudia thought that it isn't indicated to run too close to the slalom poles - not that I put my leg in her way and she falls.. Well we saved this up for our Friday meet up. We did the obstacle run there also a couple of times and I ran beside her while my mom Sissi got in her way, stopped her and threw her to the ground. Well Claudia is used to this and now she has to go around with knocked up knees again.
Also - erst einmal einige Punkte zum Rally Obedience:
However our enthusiasm hasn't been restricted. We already visited a rally obedience tournament and told you about it. But to watch and participate are two different things. We will see if we can take part in a tournament and continue to train.
Here already some remarks about rally obedience:
1. For participating in RO you don't have to have the BH exam (I like that!)
Was meiner Mama gefallen würde: in der Seniorenklasse darf man viel öfter Leckerli geben.
2. There are different levels: beginner, level 1-3 and veterans (there my mom Sissi could participate, she became 8 in May. My mom would like the idea that they give treats more often there. But I think my humans wouldn't like it because she still has to work on her body. She is a little bit older now, but no excuse to let herself go.
3. A dog handler is allowed to walk with several dogs, a dog can walk with 2 handlers max.
4. After every exercise treats are allowed (very good for my treat loving mom) The course is different every time - not so boring like the BH exam, also in THS it is defined and steady.
6. The dog can be praised and motivated continuously - We like this!
7. There is a tournament sheet which you can print yourself. After getting a certain amount of points you will be upgraded to the next level.
8. Everything takes place in a pleasant atmosphere for dogs and humans.
9. Vulgar behavior is not appreciated (so pay attention, Alpha, not to spoil everything!)
10. The humans are expected to be friendly to us as well (you bet!)
In the meantime we learned that you reeeally have to be early to register for these tournaments because the places are taken at once. Seems that it is very attractive for the fact that you don't need this BH exam. We will continue to train and tell you all about it in the future.

Hey guys, this is your Alpha - again I showed that I am impredictable. We have been to our extra lessons and trained a lot. When we had our final rehearsal we weren't really good. Then there was a severe lecture and after that we really made a great show and after that as well. But.. as it was with our exam we really didn't excel. When we went in line for the chip reading I barked in an annoying way in direction of the other dogs. Of cours I was quite nice with the judge when he read my chip but my human was already irritated by then. We were the second double team to participate with Toni, a flat coated border collie and his very young dog handler. What to say - like in the last exam, I slouched in front of the judge. We will have to examine psychologically what that means. Then I had to get down and wait and didn't leave the circle - very good. Even when Toni was running all over the camp I stayed thee and just got up - this cost me some self-command.
After hat we did our walk with about 30 Centigrade Celsius (not my favorite weather, I would have preferred rain). The judge that walking on the leash and without leash was far from perfect. Sitting position was ok and calling from down by my human was ok as far as sitting in front, then I made another creative action - instead of sitting beside I offered slouching beside my human again. Wasn't really good. As the judge told us all of our faults I didn't want to stay in basic position. The end: not passed the test. Our partner team didn't pass es well. Really a disappointment for the little girl. We are used to this. I must say - we didn't impress with our performance but would have liked some appreciation of my self-control when little Toni ran all over the place.
Somehow it wasn't a good day - there were 8 teams and only 2 of them made the exam. Well-known phrase " he/she never did that before". So we were in good company and made some more exam experience and hat the opportunity to continue learning in another club. We will continue to exercise and of course go on with our favorite discipline, THS. Claudia thinks we have to do something about our nervousness in exams (her) and juvenile behavior (me). We will continue to report about our process. I am still young (Claudia not) and in the end we will succeed.
Anyway, I have passed my test as therapy dog. Because, in the beginning they didn't even know if I could participate. Toni had been bitten by a black shepherd some time ago and they didn't know how he would react towards another black dog. Of course Toni is intelligent and understands the difference. However, in the beginning they said "Yes, no problem with Alpha, the black giant schnauzer. But not probably as a team with Toni. What to say - in the end we have been combined as a team. This is also an achievement for me, don't you think?
Then I have another message for you - our friend Jasna with Hope - has had her first standard schnauzer litter, they still look like little moles now. Already offered myself for puppy sitting. I already am experienced with this and will get references too. Hope is a great mom and did a good job. Maybe we can come to visit when they are 1 month old. We are happy for them.
